Teflon Tape & Teflon Fabric

Overview

Teflon tape and Teflon fabric are two distinct PTFE products serving different purposes. PTFE thread seal tape (commonly called Teflon tape or plumber's tape) is a thin, soft, expanded PTFE tape wrapped around pipe threads to seal threaded fittings in fluid and gas systems — it fills microscopic gaps in threads and provides a watertight, chemical-resistant seal. PTFE-coated glass fabric (Teflon fabric or PTFE conveyor belt fabric) is a woven fibreglass cloth coated with PTFE resin — used as a non-stick, heat-resistant surface in packaging heat-sealer bars, conveyor belts in food processing and electronics, and release surfaces in press moulding. Both products rely on PTFE's combination of chemical inertness, non-stick properties, and broad temperature capability.

Typical uses

• Thread seal tape — sealing threaded pipe and fitting connections in water, gas, and process fluid systems
• PTFE fabric — heat-sealer bar covering in packaging machinery
• PTFE fabric — non-stick conveyor belts in baking ovens, food processing, and SMT reflow ovens
• PTFE fabric — release sheet in press moulding, laminating, and composite curing
• PTFE fabric — non-stick surface on hot platens in heat-press equipment

Things to confirm before ordering

• Thread seal tape or PTFE fabric — specify which product is required; they are quite different.
• Thread seal tape — confirm the tape width and thickness (standard widths are 12mm, 19mm, 25mm); some tape grades are rated for gas, others for water or process fluid service.
• PTFE fabric — confirm the required fabric weight, coating thickness, and whether the product is for conveyor use (requiring specific edge finish) or sheet/press use.
• Operating temperature — confirm maximum service temperature for PTFE fabric in conveyor or press applications.
